Super early pre-pre-season look at 2008

Stuck in the midsummer doldrums? We’re still a month away from the first reports from pre-season camp so I thought it appropriate to fill the space with an early look at this year’s schedule. You can check the ’08 schedule all season by clicking on the ’08 Football tab at the top of the page.

Aug. 30th – @ LSU: The world will be watching and wondering if the Mountaineers can pull off another stunner to kick-start the college football season. I’ll be pulling hard for an upset but I’m also a realist.

Advantage: LSU

Sept. 6th – Jacksonville:  The Dolphins finished last season with a 3-8 record after competing in a conference with football powerhouses such as Butler, Valparaiso, Davidson and Dayton.  Oh yeah, and we’ll be raising a third national championship banner before the game.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Sept. 20th – @ James Madison: Every JMU and App fan circled this game on their calendars. After an unbelievable finish to last year’s playoff game at The Rock, the Dukes will be ready for the Mountaineers.

Advantage: PUSH

Sept. 27th – Presbyterian: Very little to say about this game. See Lenior-Rhyne 2007.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Oct. 4th – The Citadel:  Armanti dismantled the Bulldogs on his own last season with an insane 291 yards of rushing en route to breaking the school’s career rushing record for a quarterback in just 20 games.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Oct. 11th – @ Samford:  The champs give little Samford a rude introduction to the Southern Conference.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Oct. 18th – @ Georgia Southern:  The Eagles snapped the Apps’ winning streak at The Rock last season and will again be a tough road test for the Mountaineers.  Will the transfer of Ohio State QB Antonio Henton be the edge?

Advantage: SLIGHT EDGE TO GEORGIA SOUTHERN

Oct. 25th – Furman: Oh, you purple Paladins.  We’ve had some wonderful memories at The Rock, haven’t we?  Does this look familiar?

Don’t expect Furman to shake the demons this year.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Oct. 31st – Wofford: The Terriers snapped the nation’s longest winning streak last year by beating the Apps in Spartanburg 42-31. The win helped Wofford to split the SoCon title with the Mountaineers. The rematch will feature 1) a night game at The Rock 2) a packed house and 3) a team looking for revenge.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Nov. 8th – @ Chattanooga:  The Mocs return both running backs who ran for over 100 yards each against the Mountaineers last season.  But App has fared pretty well at Finley Stadium in recent years – regardless of the competition.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS

Nov. 15th – Elon:  Elon QB Scott Riddle was the class of the conference last season, tossing 31 TDs and throwing for over 3,800 yards of offense.  Last year’s encounter was a high-scoring affair and with Corey Lynch no longer patrolling for the Mountaineers, will Riddle torch the Apps?

Advantage: PUSH

Nov. 22nd – @ Western Carolina – Even if the Mountaineers were coming off a winless season, I’d still favor them over the hapless Catamounts. I’m not even sure if you can legitimately call this a rivalry. In thirty “Battles for the Old Mountain Jug”, Appalachian leads the series 24 to 6, including a 79-35 beatdown last year. ‘Nuff said.

Advantage: MOUNTAINEERS
